Many companies offer synthetic insecticides for price point competition. But, when it comes to
edible vegetables, Rockwell Farms believes what you put on your edibles matters! Residuals do
one thing, they reside. All of us want to live safely, and there is no better feeling knowing that
when your kids go out to the garden and eat right off the vine that they are safe.
Our two organic OMRI certified pesticides we recommend are Fertilome Triple Action and
Safer’s Insect Killing Soap and an occasional used of Fertilome’s Spinosad Soap.
Triple Action contains Pyrethrins and Neem Oil and provides quick and more complete control. It
acts as an "exciter" to flush insect pests out of hiding and into direct contact with spray residues.
For control of Aphids, Spider Mites, Scale, Mealybugs, Whiteflies, Beetles, Loopers, Leafminers,
Leafrollers, Armyworms, Webworms, Weevils, Tent Caterpillars, Fungus Gnats, Leafhoppers,
Cabbageworms, Squash Bugs, Squash Vine Borer, Stink Bugs, Thrips, Tomato Hornworm, Lace
Bugs, Boxelder Bugs, Grasshoppers, Crickets, Ants, Earwigs, Chinch Bugs, Chiggers and many
more pests.
Triple Action is an effective fungicide for the prevention and control of various fungal diseases
including Powdery Mildew, Black Spot, Brown Spot, Dollar Spot, Snow Mold, Downy Mildew,
Anthracnose, Rust, Leaf Spot, Botrytis, Needle Rust, Scab and Flower, Twig and Tip Blight if
used every 7-14 days.
Safer’s Insect Killing Soap Concentrate eliminates insect pests so your garden plants can grow
healthy and strong. This special formulation of insecticidal soap and seaweed extract kills soft-
bodied insects while remaining gentle enough to spray directly on your plants.
Potassium salts of fatty acids are derived from the natural acids found in animal fats and plant
oils and work by weakening and breaking down the protective outer shell of the insect,
ultimately triggering dehydration and death.
Safer’s Insect Killing Soap targets and kills aphids, earwigs, grasshoppers, harlequin bugs,
leafhoppers, mealy bugs, mites, plant bugs, psyllids, sawfly larvae, soft scales, spider mites,
springtails, squash bugs, tent caterpillars, blossom thrips, and whiteflies.
Spinosad Soap is perfect for the total elimination of occasional outbreaks of insects and still
remain organically grown.
Insects Controlled: Adelgids (wooly aphids), Ants (excluding fire ants, harvester ants, Pharaoh
ants and Carpenter ants), Aphids, Armyworms, Beetles (including Colorado potato beetle,
Japanese Beetle, Elm Leaf beetle larvae), Borers, Caterpillars (including tent caterpillar), Chinch
Bugs, Codling Moth, Cutworms, Earwigs, Fruit Flies (including spotted wing Drosophila ), Grubs,
Lace Bugs, Leafhoppers, Leafminers, Leafrollers, Loopers, Moths (including gypsy moth, light
brown apple moths, European grapevine moths, buck moth larvae), Mealybugs, Mites (including
spider mites, rust mites), Mole Crickets, Plant Bugs, Psyllids (including Asian citrus psyllid),
Sawfly larvae (including pear and rose slugs), Scale insects, Thrips, Webworms, Weevils
(including black vine weevil), and Whiteflies.
On a side note, Fertilome’s Spinosad Soap also cures Powdery Mildew! So, you can kill those
squash bugs and cure powdery mildew on your lovely squash and zucchini all together!
Both, Triple Action and Safer’s Insect Killing Soap can be used up to the day of harvest.
So, our recommendation is to use Triple action every week throughout the spring during the
rainy season. Then, when rainy season is over, alternated Triple action with Safer’s Insect
Killing Soap each week.
If ever an outbreak of insects happens, mix up a quart spray bottle of Fertilome’s Spinosad
Soap or purchase the Ready to Spray for insect elimination on individual plant material.
For those people that still want to be safe but have less of a concern about being “organic”, we
got you covered. HiYield’s Garden Farm and Home and Fertilome’s organic Spinosad are the
two for you. Though Garden Farm and Home is not organic, the active ingredient (Permethrin) is
entirely safe. And the great thing is that you use so little of it to get satisfied results. A couple
teaspoons is all you need to totally eliminate most all insects.
Throughout the season, we recommend a 2-1 ratio. Meaning, use HiYield’s Garden Farm and
Home once a week for 2 weeks and then Fertilome’s Spinosad on the third week.
If this is the method you prefer, which many large growers do, we recommend using Fertilome’s
organic Fungicide 5 to eliminate the growth of any bacterial or fungal spores.
Fertilome’s Fungicide 5 is a broad-spectrum preventative biofungicide/bactericide for control or
suppression of fungal and bacterial plant diseases. The active ingredient of Fungicide 5 is a
strain (D747) of the beneficial bacterium Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Fungicide 5 also colonizes
plant root hairs, preventing establishment of disease-causing fungi and bacteria. The use of
Fertilome’s Fungicide 5 during the rainy season will surely give you that perfect fruit you strive
for.
Only one teaspoon per gallon of Fungicide 5 is needed to maintain disease control, typically
every 7-10 days. If disease is prevalent or environmental conditions such as high humidity favor
disease outbreak, increase the mixing rate to 1 tablespoon per gallon and shorten the interval
between sprays to every 3-7 days.
Fungicide 5 is OMRI certified and can be applied up to the day of harvest.
